Music of the Vampire Diaries: Love Songs for Damon and Elena
Tonight I can’t fade away a smile from my face.
The one thing better than your own relationship flourishing is when your favourite TV couple hooks up.
Say what you want about yet another teenage vampire romance, but they sure pick great music for the series soundtrack.
Here are four highlights from central love scenes of Damon and Elena.
Ed Sheeran: Kiss Me (S04E07 Damon and Elena finally give in to their feelings for each others)
“Settle down with me / And I’ll be your safety / You’ll be my lady…” Aww. Such a sweet ballad.
Blue Foundation: Eyes on Fire (S04E08 Damon and Elena’s first morning after)
Those murmuring electric guitar chords give me delicious shivers. Sexy and intense song.
Florence + the Machine: Never Let Me Go (S03E19 Elena finally kisses Damon with all she’s got)
In my opinion there’s something 80s / early 90s about this one. Others have compared it to music of Enya and Evanescence – both great bands. I didn’t fall in love instantly but the ballad grew on me. I listened this almost non-stop for days.
Marina and Diamonds: Fear and Loathing (S04E02 Elena drinks Damon’s blood)
Electric ballad full of angst but also hope and desire to change. Great vocals. This was another earworm for me.
There. I just had to share these four favourites. Now I’d love to hear from you.
For those of you who follow the Vampire Diaries, what do you think about the love triangle? Are you team Stelena or team Delena?
Is there another TV series couple you’re really rooting for? And have you discovered some great songs from your favourite series or movies? Do share 🙂
The Music of Kalevala
Have you ever heard of the epic of Kalevala? Did you know that J. R. R. Tolkien used it as his inspiration for the tragic love story of Túrin Turambar and his sister Nienor in Silmarillion?
Today I’m talking about Kalevala, a collection of Finnish mythology, at Debra Kristi’s blog as part of her brilliant Immortal Monday series. I tell the myth of Louhi, the Sorceress of the North. Head to Debra’s blog to read the story.
To give you a taste of what the Finnish language and some of our music sounds like, I wanted to share with you three songs I really like. Two of the songs are played with kantele (also called kannel), our national instrument.
In Loituma’s Eriskummallinen Kantele (Strange Kantele), a woman sings her version of the origin of kantele and kantele plays in the background. In Kalevala Väinämöinen built the first instrument from the jaws of a giant pike. But according to Loituma, kantele was made from sorrow. And indeed, much of the Finnish music is melancholy, especially the old folk songs.
In the next one Mitsuko Sato plays a song with a concert kantele that has 38 strings.
For the last song I wanted to include something more modern. Here’s Aamutähti (Morning Star) by CMX, my favourite band. (For a random detail, CMX stands for Cloaca Maxima, the Roman sewer system)
What do you think of folk music? And do listen to music sang on a different language? I’d also love to hear some music recommendations. Any genre is welcome 🙂
Thrilling Soundtrack Music
Da da… Da da… Da da…
Dun-dun Dun-dun Dun-dun Dun-dun Dun-dun – toodle-oooo…
If you heard the ominous Jaws Tune while swimming, would you paddle to the shore as fast as you could? I sure would.
That’s the power of music. It leaves strong memory residues, and enchances our movie experience by creating a sense of danger, thrill and poignancy.
Here are four movie moments that give me a twinge of excitement.
Jaws theme tune by John Williams
Last Of The Mohicans soundtrack by Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman. The main theme of the film is taken from the tune “The Gael” by Scottish singer-songwriter Dougie MacLean.
Diva Dance from The Fifth Element. The singer is Inva Mula and the song is from Gaetano Donizetti’s opera Lucia di Lammermoor.
Mind Heist: Inception soundtrack music by Hans Zimmer
I hope you enjoyed these thrilling scores. Please comment and share your favourite gripping movie moments?
Have You Heard These Great Female Voices?
Some singers just have the It Factor, the special voice that elevates them above others. Enjoy the quartet of Björk, Loreena, Emilia & Amy.
Björk: Oceania
Loreena McKennitt: Mummer’s Dance
Lisa Gerard & Hans Zimmer: Now We Are Free (from Gladiator soundtrack)
Emiliana Torrini: Gollum’s Song
Amy Winehouse: Back To Black
I’d love to hear from you. Who are your favorite female singers and songs sang by women? Do you usually listen to more music of women or men?
1 + 1 = 5 | Best Duets
Sarah Brightman & Andrea Boccelli: Time To Say Goodbye
Robbie Williams & Nicole Kidman: Something Stupid
Casey Abrams & Haley Reinhart: It’s Cold Outside
Marc Anthony & Tina Arena: I Want To Spend My Lifetime Loving You
Nick Cave & Kylie Minogue: Where The Wild Roses Grow
How did you like these songs? And what are your favourite duets?
